The journey

As the end of life's journey is uncannily felt near,
The soft thuds of ‘Kala's’ footsteps I seem to hear.
Thoughts of my wasted life bring me little cheer
And the spectre of unknown dark ahead makes me fear.

While my life unwinds in my mind like a film surreal
As I espy my foolish chase  for things ephemeral
In pursuit of endless desires -sensual and material,
I feel like a wretch having gambled life for unreal.

Deep inside me, I have always had a nagging fear,
Having spent my life without much of His thought
In acts, that would not have pleased His heart,
My final prayer made in dread,He may not hear.

Still, I strive to chant His thousand names
And utter some hymns that speak of His fame
But the thoughts of near and dear hinder me,
Even as  the failing memory makes a fool of me.

My tears are mistaken for my loathe to die
And not as the upshot of my deep remorse
For my failure to grasp the life's real purpose
And a life wasted approaching its inevitable close.

(kala means time or a form of Yama the god of death)

  1. Firstly it is not a wasted life. You have shown direction to many. The very fact that you are agile at your age...it shows that your life is not wasted
as for the poem, you have weaved the words very nicely. The initial lines gave me goosebumps

  2. I believe, it's all written there. Beautifully penned. God, for me is the goodness of our deeds for God lives within us.:)

  3. You are too good in expressing yourself, Partha Sir! Weaving words beautifully but here, it hurts. You have been a good husband, father and a good friend to many like me. Everything is already written...we do good or bad according to that. Just we have to be true to ourselves. You are a good human being and many are here to say 'aye' to that! Cheer up!

  4. I am moved to tears at this poignant poem, deeply saddened by the reflections of your life, you have been an epitome of goodness with all the virtues one could ask for and a true icon and role model for many of us. Thatha, you have played the seven ages of man in perfect style and it has brought rich dividends to your kith and kin, a journey that is spectacular and justified in all aspects and I am proud to be associated with a man who upholds all virtues.

    1. The poem, though written in first person is universal in nature and most can relate with that.

  7. Beautifully penned KP. Very close to the way I have lived my life. I wish I could make it more worthy. Not only me but many have always looked up to you and you always have been a shining beacon of life, so the ' wasted life' surely is a misnomer.
